Which engine should your Stag have — and does it still matter?

Many Stags were re-engined — most often with the Rover V8 — back when the Triumph V8's faults were unsolved and the cars were cheap. Today, with those faults well understood and values rising, an original Triumph-engined Stag is worth more and preferred by most enthusiasts. A well-done Rover conversion still makes a usable, affordable driver — just not one to pay original-car money for.

There is a real irony to the most common swap: British Leyland already owned the Rover V8, so the corporation was in effect competing with itself in its own showrooms. When later owners reached for a replacement engine, they were often reaching for another BL product.

The Triumph V8 is the heart of the car. Its character, its distinctive off-beat sound, its willingness to rev — these are part of what a Stag is. Owners who have driven both a Triumph-engined and a Rover-engined Stag almost invariably describe the converted car as competent but somehow different: a very pleasant classic GT, but not unmistakably a Stag.

The technical argument for conversion has largely evaporated. The Stag V8's original faults are now fully solved: modern coolant chemistry, uprated radiators and electric fans deal with the cooling; correct assembly and regular servicing deal with the head studs; a proper timing-chain job with modern components deals with the chains. Three practical rules cover most decisions:

  1. Pay less for a converted car. A Rover-converted Stag should cost meaningfully less than an equivalent original-engine car. Do not pay original-car money for one — the market does not, and neither should you.
  2. Inspect the quality of the conversion. Look at the engine mounts, the cooling package, the wiring loom, the exhaust routing and the paperwork. Ask when and by whom it was done, and whether the logbook reflects the change. A neat, documented conversion is a different proposition to a hurried one.
  3. Match the car to your goal. If you want a keeper or an investment, buy original (or restore a tired original back to Triumph power). If you want a cheap, usable, well-converted driver, a good Rover conversion can be a lot of car for the money.
