The reputation is real, the causes are specific and well understood, and a properly sorted Stag is a dependable car. The reputation, stated plainly
The Stag's overheating reputation is the single thing most people know about the car, and it did not come from nowhere. Enough early cars cooked their engines that the story outlived the fixes. The other truth matters just as much: a properly sorted Stag is a dependable car, and owners who keep the cooling system in order cover big miles without drama. Both things are true at once, and understanding why the design is vulnerable is what separates the two outcomes.
Why the design is vulnerable
The water pump is gear-driven from the timing chain via a jackshaft, and it is mounted high in the engine. That position is the first weakness: a relatively small loss of coolant is enough to stop the pump circulating. On most cars a slightly low coolant level is an oversight. On a Stag it is the start of a failure.
The second weakness is metallurgical. The heads are aluminium alloy on an iron block, which makes the condition of the antifreeze critical. The antifreeze in a Stag is carrying corrosion inhibitors that protect those heads, and it is not simply about freezing. Antifreeze that is old, weak or plain water lets the two metals react inside the coolant passages, and the corrosion products silt up the waterways the engine depends on.
The two failure modes
Precision matters here, because the two failures are different and only one of them gives you warning.
- Worn water pump drive gears. The gears that drive the pump can wear and shed teeth. Shed teeth can seize the jackshaft, a seized jackshaft can make the timing chain jump, and a jumped chain can bring valves and pistons into contact. This is the route from a worn pump to a wrecked engine, and it is why the pump drive is a service item rather than a fit-and-forget part. Renewal intervals and the correct parts vary, so confirm them against the workshop manual or the owners' club for your car.
- Coolant loss below the level of the pump. Because the pump sits high, coolant that falls below its level stops circulating altogether. Circulation stopping means rapid failure: the engine does not run hot and linger, it overheats quickly and does its damage in minutes rather than miles.
What overheating does to the engine
The consequences are specific, and they are worth knowing in detail because they explain why the advice above is so blunt.
- Warped alloy heads. The aluminium heads can warp under heat, and the Stag gained its reputation partly because this happened at low mileages, sometimes within 25,000 miles, on cars whose cooling was not kept in proper order.
- A hard skim limit. A warped head can sometimes be rescued by skimming, but the limit is 0.010 inches. Beyond that the head is finished, and a badly warped head can exceed the limit before machining has corrected it.
- Seized head studs. A blown gasket can put coolant onto the head studs, causing electrochemical seizure in the alloy. What began as a gasket job becomes a much harder piece of surgery.

A gauge climbing past its normal position, coolant loss you cannot account for, or a engine that feels flat and hot after ordinary driving all deserve investigation rather than hope.
