Storing a classic car

Triumph Stag Winter Lay-Up Checklist

One A4 page to work through on the day the car goes away, made from the lay-up list in the guide to storing a classic car, where each step is explained in full.

Winter lay-up checklist

Car: ______________________ Date laid up: ____________

Body, hood and cabin

  • Wash and dry the car completely, underside included, and vacuum the interior.
  • Wax or seal the paint and feed the leather.
  • Leave the hood up and dry, or the hard top fitted.
  • Fit a breathable cover, only once the car is bone dry.

Coolant, oil and fuel

  • Check the antifreeze strength and that it is a corrosion-inhibited type suited to mixed aluminium and iron.
  • Change the engine oil and filter before the car stands, not after.
  • Fill the fuel tank, preferably with E5 super unleaded, add a storage stabiliser and run the engine so treated fuel reaches the carburettors.

Battery, tyres and brakes

  • Put the battery on an intelligent conditioner, or disconnect and remove it to a dry bench.
  • Set the tyres a few psi above normal and note the pressures for spring.
  • Leave the handbrake OFF and chock the wheels.

Rodents and the building

  • Bung the exhaust and air intake against rodents, and label the bungs.
  • Set the dehumidifier running with a continuous drain, and check the auto-restart setting.

Notes for spring (pressures set, bungs fitted, anything to fix)
